Rage Avatars WordPress Plugin

At my day job I write WordPress plugins all the time. We love that platform. Writing a plugin for me is typically an exercise of utility, so when I decided to create my first “Jamie” plugin I wanted it to be almost pointless. Since Humor is one of my loves in life, I decided to create a WordPress plugin based around the often hilarious Rage Comics meme. The “Rage Comics” meme is one that has a really strong following (mostly on Reddit) and the new material just seems to write itself daily.

The rage faces were not my initial intent. My idea was to create a WordPress plugin that replaced all your commenter’s avatars with stereotypical MySpace portraits. Realizing that it would only be funny to me, I decided to shift focus to something funnier and less lame. The rage comics are funny on more than one level. To an outsider the cheaply drawn characters might seem funny just because of the sloppiness, but to the trained eye a “me gusta” or “cereal guy” image says so much more.

The easiest way to see the plugin in action is to post your Gravatar-less comment right here on this post. Enjoy, and take a peek at the plugin in the WordPress repository-why not try it out and offer a rating and or some feedback?

  1. I was looking for a way to upload my own images for commenters, and this plugin was a great solution. I know I’ll have to upload the images again when an update comes, but for now, this was the best solution and it worked marvels, easy and smooth.

Thank you very much for your work!!

  2. Hi Jamie,

I have the same issue with Maggy, will you help us please?
    Here is the error: http://snag.gy/jzWyj.jpg

    here is the src=”http://0.gravatar.com/avatar/87f60ea777b0d9395d5d4ad7ea4be745?s=53&d=http://mydomain/wp-content/plugins/rage-avatars/lib/timthumb.php?src=http://mydomain/wp-content/plugins/rage-avatars/avatars/005-forever-alone-guy.png&w=53&h=53&r=G”

I could not find a solution which will remove the ‘http://0.gravatar.com/avatar/87f60ea777b0d9395d5d4ad7ea4be745?s=53&d=’ part cause it works if I remove it.

  3. Hi,
I love your plugin because I was able to customize my blog a bit. But since some time there only show up blank quadrangle instead of the pictures… If the people have gravatar Images the gravatar image shows up (as you can see here http://mietzecacher.de/500-mietzefans-gewinnspiel/) it would be great if you can help me 🙂

  4. Hi Jamie, I’ve activated the rage avatars but only the default mystery man image is showing up. Is there any other plugins I need to install to be able to use this? My website is: http://blog.fifthstorey.com/ Looking forward to your reply, thanks!

  5. Hi! I love this plug-in, but it seems to have disappeared from the WordPress directory.

Any idea what is going on?

  6. I installed this plugin but it did not work. Do I need to change anything in the “discussion setting” for this Rage Avatar plugin to work?

I love these memes and it would be so awesome to have them replace the default avatar of commenters that do not have their own avatars.

    • Hey techtikus,
I’m sorry it didn’t work right away for you. I’m wondering if it has to do with your current theme. Is there a free version of the elemental theme? If there is I’d be happy to test it out on my local development machine.

To answer your question more directly: No, there should be nothing you need to change in your settings after activating the plugin.

      • Nope I don’t think that there’s a free version of the Elemental theme.

Hmm if that is so, maybe I’ll try it on different themes to see whether it is working or not. If it doesn’t work as well maybe I have to look at other ways to get this plugin working.

Thanks Jamie for the help, I appreciate it :).
